What is the role of an Association Leader?

Traditionally, it was the Associaiton Presidents that represented the organisation, and in most cases, the Industry at large. As Association Secretariats are becoming more professional, with their budgets, size and influence rising, Association Executives are invited to represent the sector at meetings with stakeholders, policymakers and even speak on behalf of the sector to the general public.

Things are getting more interesting in a time of turbulance, when Associations are expected to react fast and adapt to an ever-changing landscape.

Are Association Leaders equiped with the right tools to speak on behalf of their sector? What about the Governance structures within the organisation that might or might not foresee this? How can Association Leaders take up this responsibility while keeping the right balance?
